Your Survival Guide for Troubled Times (and a Trump Presidency)

Survival is an act of resistance. Thriving is a middle finger to those who want you crushed under the weight of their chaos. In dark times, taking care of yourself isn’t selfish — it’s necessary. Stay informed, but don’t drown in doom. Speak out, but don’t let them live in your head rent-free. And most of all, remember: the strength we build now will outlast them.

Let’s be real: This moment in history is heavy. The world feels like it’s on fire, democracy is under siege, and a small group of people with too much money and too little empathy are trying to reshape society in their image. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or straight-up angry, you’re not alone.

But here’s the thing: Survival is an act of resistance. Thriving is a middle finger to those who want you crushed under the weight of their chaos.

Here’s how to survive — and fight back — without losing yourself in the process.

1. Take Care of Yourself, First and Foremost

If you burn out, they win. Period.

  • Prioritize self-care like your life depends on it — because it does. Rest, nourish your body, move, and disconnect when you need to.
  • Be kind to yourself. You are not a machine. You’re allowed to feel exhausted. You’re allowed to need a break.
  • Find your joy. Even in dark times, there is light. Music, art, nature, friendships — whatever keeps your soul alive, chase it.

Your well-being isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for the long game.

2. Stay Aware — But Don’t Let the Doom Consume You

  • Yes, be informed. Eyes wide open. Know what’s happening so you can act.
  • But be intentional. Don’t let algorithms trap you in an endless doom-scroll. Check the news, then step away.
  • Be careful with your mental energy. You don’t need to watch every horror unfold in real-time to stay engaged.
  • Avoid catastrophizing. This is bad, no doubt. But panic leads to paralysis. We need you thinking clearly.

Information is power. Fear is control. Learn the difference.

3. Don’t Let Him Live in Your Head Rent-Free

Trump, Musk, Vance, and the rest of them want your constant attention. Don’t give it to them. Instead:

  • Focus on what’s good in your life. Love. Family. Music. Laughter. Sunsets. Resistance.
  • Take on new challenges. Learn something. Build something. Take up space in the world in ways that bring you joy.
  • Channel your rage into action. Donate. Volunteer. Organize. Make them regret ever making you angry.

Misery loves company. Decline the invitation.

4. Manifest Something Better

This part sounds ridiculous, but hear me out:

Visualize these terrible people waking up one day and realizing they’ve already won. They have all the money, all the power, all the validation. There’s nothing left to take. What if, instead, they decided to dedicate their lives to actually doing good?

Maybe it’s naïve. Maybe it’s a long shot. But your mindset matters. Manifest positivity, even in the darkest times.

5. Be Edgy. Be Provocative. Be a Healer.

We are in a moment that calls for fire — but also for healing.

  • Call out the bullshit. Say the thing that needs to be said. Loudly.
  • But don’t lose your humanity. We’re not fighting to become as cruel as them — we’re fighting to keep our souls intact.
  • Hold space for hope. Even in the midst of chaos, believe in something better.

Be Not Afraid

Trump and his coalition of oppression want you living in fear — that’s the real goal. Fear paralyzes. Fear keeps us from organizing, from building, from believing in a future that isn’t ruled by their greed and cruelty.

Yes, be aware. Understand the destruction they are creating and the chaos they are sowing. But do not let fear control you. Keep your sights set on building your community and your personal resilience. Fear makes them stronger. Courage makes us unstoppable.

Every time we speak out, every time we organize, every time we push forward instead of cowering — we flip the script.

He wants us afraid of him.

But we want him to be afraid of us.

You Are Needed. You Are Not Alone.

If you’re feeling this moment deeply, you’re not alone. Who Will Save Us Now — a song by my band, Theory of Change — captures the weight of these times. It’s a reflection on resilience, the absence of easy saviors, and the power of collective action. If music helps you process, maybe this can be part of your playlist for the fight ahead.

The worst thing you can do right now? Check out entirely.

The second worst thing? Burn out and give up.

Find the balance. Take care of yourself. Stay aware. Take action where you can. And above all — remember why you fight.

Dark times don’t last forever. But the strength we build in surviving them does.
